REGIONAL INFRASTRUCTURAL DESIGN INITIATIVE / OLLANTAYTAMBO, CUSCO, PERU / 2008
| Through partnership with the World Bank, COPESCO, and local government, partstudio members addressed the complex relationship between tourism and tradition within the Sacred Valley, Peru. Study of the friction between economics and heritage focused on the Quechua city and tourist hub, Ollantaytambo, 45km up the valley from Machu Picchu. The growing infrastructural needs of tourism are at odds with the historic organization of the city, and the ever-increasing human impact on the region endangers the cultural heritage and environmental vitality which sustain the population. By thorough analysis and an iterative design process, partstudio members developed a range of appropriate proposals for the reorganization of the transit infrastructure of the Sacred Valley and the design of a transit center for Ollantaytambo, with a clear focus on cultural heritage preservation and environmental sustainability. | A través de la colaboración con el Banco Mundial, COPESCO, y los gobiernos locales de Cusco, los varios miembros de partstudio trabajaron con la compleja relación entre turismo y patrimonio cultural en el Valle Sagrado. El estudio hecho de la fricción entre ganancia económica y patrimonio cultural fue enfocada en Ollantaytambo; una cuidad a 45km al este de Machu Picchu, y compuesto tanto de gente Quecha como turistas. La demanda en crecimiento de infraestructura para complacer el constantemente mayor número de turistas pone en peligro la antigua e histórica forma de la cuidad. Además, el número de personas ingresando a la cuidad y a la región están poniendo en peligro el patrimonio cultural y la vitalidad ambiental, los cuales son puntos de identidad de la población de estas áreas. Atreves de una investigación y diseño iterativo, los miembros de Partstudio propusieron un rango de soluciones para reorganizar el tránsito vehicular dentro del Valle y diseñaron un centro de tránsito para Ollantaytambo enfocado en la preservación e interés del patrimonio cultural y sostenibilidad ambiental. |
